The history of conservation of Canaletto's Bucentaur's return to the pier by the Palazzo Ducale

The first known conservation of the painting happened in the Hermitage in 1849, when it was transferred to a new canvas.

The first time the painting was treated in our museum was in 1958 by Pavel Korin. A complex cleaning of the old dark-orange varnish and numerous inpaintings darkened with time.

In 2018, another treatment was required, as the varnish on the surface turned yellow, dull and uneven. Also, with time, the inpaintings have changed in colour. All that distorted the original look of the painting and required correction.

In some areas the paint and ground layers were delaminated

During the conservation treatments the painting was consolidated and cleaned, the dirt was removed from the surface; the varnish thinned and smoothened, its translucency returned; the colour of the inpaintings fixed.
