Conservation of Renaissance bronze sculptures completed at the Pushkin State Museum

17 bronze sculptures seriously damaged during the explosions and fire in the bunker Friedrichshain Park in the last days of World War II included in the project "Donatello and other Renaissance masters: research and conservation" were restored at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.

All items, among which there are rare and valuable originals from the 15-16th centuries, have been severely damaged by fire, many are deformed. The conservators were faced with a difficult task of making it possible to exhibit them again, which called for a different conservation approach in each individual case. Comprehensive studies were conducted with the use of 3D scanning and modelling.

Now, information about all the bronze sculptures can be found on the project’s webpage, the exhibition of the pieces is planned for the fall of 2019. Two objects included in the "Donatello" project – Donatello’s "John the Baptist”, and Giulio Mazzoni's "Francesco del Nero" are already on display at the main building of the museum.
